Vocal Effects | Software | Processors
The vocal is the most important feature to make a song popular. It includes the melody, rhythm and structure of a track. Vocal effects are added to an audio track in order to make it interesting to the audience. A computer uses a vocal effects processor to add various effects to a music file. A vocal effects pedal can be mounted with certain musical instruments to create necessary vocal effects to the output audio.
One way of improving the vocal tracks to sound impressive is through dynamic processing. This process refers to altering the volume differences in a vocal track to give a consistent outputand level in a mix.The dynamic process involves four types of vocal effects namely compression, limiting, gating and expansion. The most common used effects are the compression and limiting. They are applied on vocal tracks to even out the transients in the recording by keeping the level steady. It also places the vocals in slightly higher level than the other instruments in a mix.The compression vocal effect generally consists of peak limiting, squashing and light constant compression.
Another vocal effect involved in dynamic processing on vocals is gating. Gates only allow audio signals that are above a specified threshold. The signals that fall below the threshold cannot enter the gate as the force of the signals are partially or fully reduced. It can allow only louder signals to pass through and rejects the softer signals. In a way it eliminates all unwanted noises such as breath, humming and reverb tails. The gate vocal effect examines the audio signal and determines its threshold level. If it detects a lower threshold level, the gate closes and blocks the signal from reaching the output. Gate has a range parameter, which determines the reduction of volume level in a signal that falls below the threshold.
Another type of vocal effect is the depth processing that deals with creating an atmosphere. Depth processing that involves two major vocal effects: reverb and delay uses sound reflection to create roominess to vocal tracks. These two vocal effects trick the listeners’ minds as though the vocals are emanating from a larger room or environment by creating reflections along with the original sound. The short repeat times represent small acoustical rooms while long delay effects give the trick of largeness.
Reverb vocal effect sounds more impressive when applied in stereo for concerts. Many plug-ins used in vocal effects processor permit mono input/stereo output reverb processing and this enables you to grab the reverb returns for a big stereo image. There are no rules for applying reverbs in vocal tracks and the trend of the music industry is to observe certain types of reverbs used in popular music and adapt the same in the new ones. So, you can add your effects by hearing to various musical performances and identifying the effects used by engineers in the vocal tracks. Dynamic and depth processing are two of the most important ways to advance the sound of your vocal tracks by applying vocal effects.
